Pull up a chair, friend. Let’s rewind the story before everything fell apart. This is your introduction to Job—before the losses, before the boils, before the friends who should’ve just kept their mouths shut. Let’s meet the man God called “the finest in all the earth.”
When we think about suffering in the Bible, Job’s name always comes up. But I think sometimes we forget that before the ashes and heartbreak, there was a man with a quiet faith, a steady walk with God, and a life that, by all appearances, looked pretty good.
Introduction to Job: Who Was he?
“There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless—a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil.” —Job 1:1 (NLT)
Let me go ahead and say it—this man wasn’t perfect, but he was the real deal. Upright. Honest. He wasn’t just playing church. He lived it out.
Job had a big family (seven sons and three daughters), loads of land and livestock, and a heart that leaned hard into God. He even prayed on behalf of his kids regularly, just in case they had unknowingly sinned. That’s the kind of dad he was.
This Was a Man God Was Proud Of
Let’s not miss this: God bragged on Job.
“Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity.” –Job 1:8 (NLT)
Can you imagine God calling you out like that? Not to shame you—but to point to your life as an example of faith. Whew. That’s the kind of walk I want.
But right after this moment, things start to shift. The enemy shows up, accusing Job of only being faithful because his life is good. And God allows a season of testing—not as punishment, but as a powerful proving of Job’s rooted faith.
Why Start Here? Because Character Comes Before Crisis
This introduction to Job matters because we need to see who he was before the storm. Too often we jump straight into the suffering without recognizing that Job didn’t “earn” what was coming. He wasn’t being corrected. He was being trusted.
And friend, sometimes your storm isn’t about something you did wrong. It might be about something God knows you’ll handle right.
Let This Be Your Reminder Today
- God sees your integrity, even if no one else applauds it.
- Quiet obedience still speaks loud in heaven.
- You can be faithful and still face hardship—but your faith will not be wasted.
This post is the starting point. In the next one, we’ll watch Job’s world turn completely upside down. But for now, I want to leave you with this:
Job’s strength didn’t come from the crisis—it came from the consistency of his walk with God long before the wind ever blew.
