Joseph Sold Into Slavery: When Dreams Don’t Make Sense

Ever have a dream in your heart that seems to be taking you the exact opposite direction? That’s pretty much the story of Joseph sold into slavery — big dreams, betrayal, and a whole lot of waiting.

As I’ve been reading through the Bible in chronological order, this part of God’s chosen family hit me right in the gut. Because sometimes God’s plans look NOTHING like we thought they would.

Joseph and His Dreams

Joseph was his dad’s favorite (big surprise when you give the kid a fancy technicolor robe 🙃). He had dreams that one day his family would bow down to him — and like any young guy, he was probably a little too eager to share it.

“Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”
(Genesis 37:6-7 NLT)

His brothers weren’t exactly thrilled. They hated him for it. And honestly? Who could blame them.

Joseph Sold Into Slavery by His Brothers

One day they saw Joseph coming from afar, plotted to kill him, then settled on something just as heartless — they sold him to a caravan of traders heading for Egypt.

“So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him for twenty pieces of silver…”
(Genesis 37:28 NLT)

Joseph sold into slavery.
So much for dreams of greatness.

Can you imagine how betrayed he felt? Thrown into a pit by your own family. Watching them walk away counting their silver.

Why Joseph Sold Into Slavery Still Speaks to Me

Reading this, I thought about all the times I’ve felt left behind, overlooked, or betrayed by people I trusted. Times life seemed to go backward instead of forward.

Joseph’s dreams didn’t come true right away. Actually, they seemed to crash and burn. But God was still working — right there in the dust and disappointment.
