Lot’s story in Genesis — how he settled near Sodom and Gomorrah and what happened when God told him to run — is one of those big flashing neon lessons that shows us exactly what’s at stake.

Lot Sodom and Gomorrah Bible story with Lot’s wife turned into a pillar of salt

Lot settled near Sodom — and stayed too long

In the story of God’s chosen family, Abraham’s nephew Lot seemed to have it made.
He pitched his tents near Sodom because it looked good, comfortable, maybe even a little exciting.
But what starts out looking safe can sometimes turn toxic fast.
Before Lot knew it, he was living right inside a city so rotten God was about to wipe it off the map. (Genesis 19)
It’s the perfect example of how we sometimes settle close to compromise — and then find ourselves smack in the middle of it.

When God says go, don’t hesitate

Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah isn’t just some old Bible story — it’s a mirror for our own compromises. The angels came to Lot and said it straight: run for your life.
But Lot hesitated.
Genesis 19:16 says, “When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety…”
God literally had to drag Lot out of the place He planned to destroy.
Sometimes that’s exactly how He works in our lives too — yanking us out of situations we would have stayed in way too long.

Don’t look back like Lot’s wife

Lot’s wife made one fatal mistake.
She turned around for just one more look at what used to be, and it cost her everything.
She became a pillar of salt right there in the middle of God’s rescue.
It’s a hard reminder that when God pulls you out of something, looking back can stop you from ever stepping into what He’s saved you for.

What Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah teach us today?

Maybe God’s been telling you to let go of something.
Maybe He’s nudging you to leave behind a habit, a person, or even a version of your life that feels comfortable but isn’t where He wants you anymore.
I’ve been there too — hanging on tight, convinced I couldn’t live without it.
Turns out, God is more committed to our future than our comfort.
And the very thing I thought I couldn’t survive letting go of? It was the thing keeping me from His best.

A little encouragement today from Lot Sodom and Gomorrah

If God’s been telling you to move — to run, to trust Him, to stop looking over your shoulder — don’t wait for Him to drag you out like Lot.
Run now.
Don’t look back.
Because what He’s leading you to is always better than what He’s pulling you from.
