Have you ever felt like life has passed you by? Maybe you’re just doing the same daily routine, wondering if God has anything more in store. That’s exactly where we find Moses before Moses and the burning bush. He wasn’t leading armies or standing in a palace. He was watching sheep. Ordinary, quiet, repetitive work.

And yet, in the middle of that desert, God set a bush on fire and spoke directly to him. Friend, that tells me something — God doesn’t need grand stages to show up. He meets us in the middle of our everyday lives, and when He does, it’s anything but ordinary.Moses and the burning bush

Moses and the Burning Bush — God Shows Up in the Ordinary

Picture this: Moses is tending his flock, dusty and tired, probably thinking this day looks just like yesterday. Then he notices a bush burning, but it’s not burning up. That’s strange enough to make him stop. That’s when God speaks.

Moses and the burning bush teaches us that God doesn’t need to follow our schedule or expectations. He breaks into the ordinary to remind us that He is extraordinary. Sometimes the holiest moments come when we least expect them — folding laundry, driving to work, or standing in the grocery line.

Holy Ground in the Middle of the Desert

When Moses and the burning bush happened, Moses heard something startling: “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). Let that sink in — the same dirt Moses had walked on a hundred times suddenly became sacred because God’s presence was there.

That’s what His presence does. It turns regular ground into holy ground. Friend, you may feel like your life is mundane right now, but when God steps in, it becomes meaningful. The kitchen sink, your office desk, even the waiting room at the doctor’s office can become a place where heaven touches earth.

Excuses at the Burning Bush

Let’s be real: Moses wasn’t jumping up and down ready for the assignment. At Moses and the burning bush, he rattled off excuse after excuse.

  • “Who am I that I should go?”
  • “What if they don’t believe me?”
  • “I don’t speak well.”

Sound familiar? We do the same thing. “I’m not qualified. But I’m too old. I’m too young. I don’t have the right words.” But here’s the beauty — God never argued with Moses about his weaknesses. He simply promised His presence: “I will be with you.”

Your excuses don’t cancel God’s calling. If He has chosen you, He will equip you. The bush kept burning without being consumed — that’s a picture of what God’s Spirit does in us. He sets us ablaze with purpose without burning us out.

What Moses and the Burning Bush Teaches Us About Calling

Here’s the thing about calling: it rarely comes when we feel ready. Moses felt small and unqualified, yet God saw a deliverer. You may feel like a shepherd in the desert, but God sees the leader, the encourager, the builder, the prayer warrior in you.

Moses and the burning bush reminds us that God doesn’t wait for us to have it all together. He comes to us where we are, sandals off, dust on our feet, hearts trembling — and He calls us anyway.

How We Can Respond Today

When God calls, how will you respond?
Pay attention. Like Moses, turn aside and look when something unusual grabs your spirit.
Acknowledge His presence. Take off your sandals — pause, breathe, and honor God right where you are.
Stop making excuses. God’s presence is enough to cover your weaknesses.
Step out in obedience. The burning bush wasn’t the end of the story. It was the beginning of a rescue plan.

Save this for later!

Lessons from the Wilderness

Moses and the burning bush proves God doesn’t forget us in our quiet seasons. He can take the desert places of our lives and transform them into holy encounters. Friend, don’t dismiss the ordinary. You never know when God might set something ablaze to get your attention.

When He calls, even in the most unexpected ways, He is saying: “I am with you.”
