This Thin Blue Line Floral American Flag is a beautiful blend of bold and delicate—perfect for honoring our law enforcement heroes while adding a unique touch to your home decor.
I came up with this idea after wanting something that felt both meaningful and pretty. The mix of florals with the classic American flag design gives this project a soft, personal feel while still making a strong statement.

Creative Ways to Display It
One thing I really enjoy about this project is how versatile it is. You can hang it, lean it, or layer it into a gallery wall. It also fits beautifully with farmhouse, rustic, or even modern decor styles.
If you want to make it your own, try switching up the colors—add red, white, & blue for an Americana style. Another great option is to switch out the color of the line from blue to red for firefighters, or green for military. The options are endless. There’s no wrong way to personalize it to match the decor style you love!
How to Make a Thin Blue Line Floral American Flag – Step-by-Step

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
- Silk screen transfer (American flag or floral design)
- Small paint roller
- Paint of your choice (I used Folk Art Vintage White)
- Stain for the old rustic look (Dixie Bell No Pain Gel Stain in American Honey was my choice)
- Chalk paste in white, black, and blue (Grabbing Cherry would be a fantastic option as well)
- A smooth surface like a wood sign or board (I used a 16″ Round I have in my shop here)
- Squeegee
- Floral embellishments or a beautiful bow
Pro Tip: You can even grab ink colors from my shop and using the same transfer make a permanent project on a teeshirt, apron, coffee mug, or anything you can iron or bake in an oven!
Step 2: Prep Your Surface
Make sure your board is clean and smooth. Grab your roller and start to apply the paint in a back and forth rolling not quite going all the way to the edge of the round if you would like the look I have. Dry it completely with your heat tool or naturally. Now apply your stain all over the round, yes over the painted part for that extra vintage look. Let that dry fully before applying your transfer.
Step 3: Position the Floral American Flag Transfer
Place the silk screen transfer on your round or board of your choice. Press it down gently to avoid bubbles.
Step 4: Apply Chalk Paste
Starting the top, use your squeegee to spread the black paste over the transfer. The chalk paste will dry in your silk screen and will not stick to your project. So I recommend after about 30-60 seconds, lift your transfer where you have chalked. Then just gently drop your transfer down back to the original position not pressing it down. Continue chalking the remaining project. Wipe away the excess. Then apply the blue chalk paste to form the Thin Blue Line.
Step 5: Peel and Reveal
Slowly peel back the transfer to reveal your design. Let it dry for a few minutes—chalk paste dries pretty quick!
Step 6: Add Florals or Bow (Optional)
If you would like to add any additional accessories such as greenery, florals, and/or a bow, now is the time to do that. Choose anything that you love to add to your project for that little extra 3D look. I added a bit of greenery and made a simply loop bow.
Step 7: Display with Pride
Once everything’s dry, your flag is ready to hang or display. It’s a perfect mix of patriotic pride and handmade beauty!
