Mary and Martha: Choosing the Better Part

Mary and Martha weren’t just sisters in a Bible story — they were a real household in Bethany, close with Jesus, and stuck in the same tension we’re all stuck in right now heading into fall: how do you keep everything running and actually stay present for your own life?

Mary and Martha: Two Sisters, One Kitchen

Martha opened her home to Jesus and His disciples, which back then wasn’t a casual thing — hospitality carried real weight, and feeding a crowd like that was on her shoulders. Meanwhile her sister Mary sat down at Jesus’s feet, a position culturally reserved for disciples, not women. Worn out and doing exactly what was expected of her, Martha finally said something:

“Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” (Luke 10:40, NLT)

The Better Part

Jesus’s response wasn’t a scolding, and it wasn’t picking a side:

“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NLT)

He never told Martha to stop serving. He pointed at something more personal — it wasn’t what she was doing, it was what was happening in her while she did it. Somewhere between the cooking and the serving, she’d gone from loving well to keeping score.

Why It Still Matters

This story was never really about kitchens. It’s about how easy it is to do everything for the people we love and still miss actually being with them. Fall’s about to get full — sports, school, the holiday hustle creeping in early. Somewhere in the middle of all that managing, there’s still a chance to choose the better part. Not less doing. Just more presence in the doing.
