Last resort is not where God belongs, but if we’re honest, that’s exactly where a lot of us keep Him. Something good happens and most of us are already typing it into the group chat or out on social media before we’ve processed it ourselves. Something bad happens and we’re calling four or five different people, maybe posting a vague sentence or two about it, way before we ever think to pray about it.

What Jesus Says About Prayer

Matthew 6:5-8 tells us not to pray like the people who made a show out of it, praying loudly in public just to be seen, or babbling on thinking more words mean a better chance of being heard. Instead, go somewhere private, and don’t overthink the wording, because God already knows what you need before you even ask. Then Jesus gives us the actual model to follow, the Lord’s Prayer, right there in verses 9-13, short and simple, covering who God is, what we need, forgiveness, and protection, all in just a handful of lines.

What Jesus Says About Fasting

Verses 16-18 cover fasting the same way. Don’t walk around looking miserable to prove you’re doing it. Wash your face, comb your hair, go about your day looking completely normal, and let it stay between you and God. This applies just as much during seasons like Lent, when it’s natural to talk about what you’re giving up. There’s nothing wrong with sharing that for real accountability. The question is just whether you’re sharing it to stay honest, or hoping for a little admiration for how disciplined you are.

Join the Prayer Movement

My dear friend JoAnne started something called Prayer Action Warriors (PAW), and it’s beautifully simple. Every day at 12 noon, no matter where you are, you pause and pray the Lord’s Prayer. That’s the whole commitment. If you don’t have it memorized, you’ll find it right in Matthew 6:9-13, part of what we’re talking about in today’s episode.

JoAnne sends out a weekly email with encouragement and updates for anyone joining in. She’s not doing this for attention, she’s doing it because she genuinely believes there’s power in believers all over, scattered miles apart, praying that same prayer at the same moment. If you want to be part of it, set a reminder on your phone for noon and start praying along.
