What does it mean to be persecuted today? If you have ever been sitting in a room where you knew something was wrong and said absolutely nothing — you already know the answer. That freeze in your chest or that moment where your mouth just will not open because you are too scared of what people will think — that is exactly where this conversation starts.
You know that feeling. Every single one of us does.
There is a scene in the movie The Blind Side where Leigh Anne Tuohy is sitting at lunch with her friends and they are spinning every reason why she should not help Michael Oher. And she just looks at them and says shame on y’all. She did not care what they thought but knew what was right and she said it out loud in front of everybody.
How many times have you been at that table — and you did not speak your mind like Leigh Anne?
What Does It Mean to Be Persecuted Today According to Scripture
In Matthew 5:10 Jesus says something that stops you cold. The Message puts it this way — blessed are those who are harassed because they are living out the kind of life the kingdom of God requires. And the NLT says — God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Persecuted. That is a heavy word. And most of us hear it and immediately think about the big stuff. Jail. Torture. Losing everything. And yes, that happened and it still happens in parts of the world today. But that is not the only way it shows up.
What does it mean to be persecuted today in your actual real life? It is the friend who stops texting you because you would not laugh at their joke. It is the family member who makes you feel small for what you believe. The coworker who treats you completely different because of your faith. It is being left out, being talked about, and being made to feel like you are the problem — all because you would not go along.
That is persecution too. The everyday kind. And that is exactly what Jesus was talking about.
Why Jesus Knew Persecution Was Coming
Jesus told his disciples straight up — they hated me and they are going to hate you too. If the world hates you, remember it hated me first. He was not being dramatic. He was preparing them for what was actually coming. Arrest. Councils. Loss of jobs, status, and safety. Some of them lost their lives.
What matters for us right now is Jesus did not say blessed are those who are persecuted if you live this way. He said blessed are those who are persecuted because you are living this way. There is a big difference there. It is not random hardship or bad luck. It is the direct result of choosing to live by kingdom values in a world that does not.
The persecution is not punishment but proof that you are actually living the way you should be.
What Does It Mean to Be Persecuted Today and Why It Makes People So Uncomfortable
When you do the right thing, the people around you do not always celebrate it. Sometimes they get quiet or they get defensive. Sometimes they even get downright mean. And you’re standing there thinking — I did not do anything wrong. So why is everybody acting like I did?
Because when you speak up you become a mirror. And nobody likes looking at their reflection when they do not like what they see.
When you choose differently it shines a light on the choice everybody else made. When you live with integrity it exposes the places where other people are not. So instead of looking at themselves, they look at you. And they make you the problem.
That is as old as humanity itself. Joseph told the truth and ended up in a pit. Jeremiah spoke what God told him to speak and got thrown in a cistern. Jesus healed people, loved people, told the truth about who God was — and they crucified him for it. Doing right has never been a guarantee of being liked or being safe. But Jesus did not say blessed are those who are comfortable.
Salt Light and What You Were Actually Made For
Right after Jesus talks about what does it mean to be persecuted today he says something that changes everything. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.
That is not a coincidence. That is a progression.
In Jesus’s day salt was not just something you shook on your food. It was survival. It was how you kept food from rotting before refrigerators existed. Roman soldiers were actually paid in salt — that is where we get the phrase worth his salt. So when Jesus calls you the salt of the earth he is not handing out a cute compliment. He is saying you are essential. You are preservation. You are the thing that keeps this world from completely rotting.
And light? Light does not try or strategize. Light just is. And darkness cannot exist where light shows up. That is not a motivational poster — that is actual physics. The second light arrives, darkness has to leave. That is you.
Jesus does not say go be the light. He says you ARE the light. It is already in you. The question is whether you have been hiding it under a bowl.

After the craziness that I have been going through and the last couple days being extra tough I needed to come across this. You really don’t know how bad I needed this! My husband of 12 Years who I never argued with and vice versa just up and left when I was sleeping. Like What the heck did I do? I honestly still have no clue. Would I do know is that I am a God loving Christian woman, and he is an unbeliever. So I’m wondering if that could bethe reason? Either way I’m very hurt. I also know that hurt does not come from our Father. I was baptized last March and that’s when things started getting a little wonky with me and my husband, but we still weren’t fighting. Anyhow, I really just needed this andI wanted to thank you. If you wouldn’t mind, could you pray for me? I thank you in advance and I pray that you have a lovely day.
Oh sweet girl, my heart just broke reading this. I am SO sorry — waking up to find your husband of 12 years gone, with no real answers? That’s not just hard, that’s flat out gut-wrenching, and you have every right to feel as hurt and confused as you do.
Only the Lord knows what’s really going on in somebody’s heart. But I do know this — your faith is NOT what broke this marriage, and don’t you let anybody (including the enemy whispering in your ear) convince you otherwise. You got baptized and started growing closer to Jesus, and sometimes that kind of light just exposes what was already cracked.
You are covered in prayer, friend, I promise you that. Praying God wraps you up tight, gives you a peace that doesn’t make a lick of sense given the circumstances, and puts some good people around you — friends, family, your church family, maybe even a good Christian counselor — to help carry you through this hard and confusing time.
Thank you for trusting me with something this personal, that means a lot. Sending you a big ol’ hug and so much love, sweet friend. You’re gonna be okay, I just know it. 🙏💛
