I need to clean out my shed. We’ve had it three years now, and it was supposed to be my sheeshed, my little business space. Instead it’s full of thrift finds, holiday decor for every season, and honestly, I don’t even remember what’s in half of it. My husband keeps suggesting a yard sale and I about have a meltdown every time.
What Jesus Says About Treasure
Matthew 6:19-21 tells us not to store up treasure here on earth, where it can rot, rust, or get stolen, and instead store it up in heaven, where none of that can touch it. Wherever your treasure is, that’s where your heart ends up too. Verse 24 takes it a step further saying: you cannot serve both God and money. It doesn’t say “it’s hard to serve both.” You cannot serve God and money.
I try to live by the 10-10-80 rule, tithe 10%, save 10%, live on the rest. I don’t hit it perfectly every month, but having that order, God first, matters more than the exact number.
What Jesus Says About Worry
Verses 25-34 talk about worry, and it flows straight out of the treasure conversation. God feeds the birds. He dresses the wildflowers better than Solomon ever looked. And you’re worth more to Him than either one. Verse 33 sums it up and it might be my favorite verse in this section. Seek the Kingdom first, and everything else falls into place. Not seek only. Seek first, HE doesn’t get the leftovers.
What I’m Actually Holding Onto
This one had me doing some real thinking about my own shed all week. A lot of why I can’t let go of stuff out there is worry, if I’m honest. What if I need it someday. What if I can’t replace it later. That’s exactly the kind of thinking Jesus is talking about here. So I’m doing it. I’m cleaning out that shed.
